One of the most important and widely-performed composers of contemporary classical music, Mark-Anthony Turnage is renowned for his unique fusion of 'high' and 'low' culture, resulting in an eclectic, colourful and distinctive musical voice. His output ranges from operas and large-scale orchestral works to chamber music and song cycles, and frequently absorbs the influence of jazz, rock and popular culture.

Turnage studied with Oliver Knussen and John Lambert in London and has held residencies/associations with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera, BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His music is recorded on labels including Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Warner Classics and Chandos, and in 2015 he was awarded a CBE for his contribution to British music. He is a stand-out international figure in contemporary music and the opportunity to hear him discuss his works in person is not to be missed.

St. Catherine’s College Symposium

(see attached poster)

Cambridge University Hockey Club College Academy

CUHC's (Hockey Club) College Academy is up and running again this term. The College Academy started last year and runs training sessions for any student who wants to play a bit more hockey. The sessions are relaxed and fun, with a focus on skills and match-play. The first session will be this Sunday 22nd January 9-10.30 at Wilberforce Road Pitch. (Apologies for the early start - CUHC's alumni games are running all day!).

This term, we have the added incentive of forming a development 4th team from Academy players. Oxford have had a Men's 4th team for the past season, so there will likely be (98% sure, we just need to fix the date) a Men's 4th Team Varsity.

We're really sorry that we can't offer the same opportunity for a Women's 4th team Match - this is purely down to Oxford not having a team. However, the Academy training sessions are still open to everyone, so we'd like to encourage girls to still come down.

Dates and times of the sessions planned so far are as follows, (with some more to be added in).

29/01 - 14.00-16.00
05/02 - 14.00-16.00
12/02 - 9.00-10.00 (provisional)

19/02 - 12.00-14.00
There is a Facebook event which includes a link to a Googledoc for people to sign up their crsids: https://www.facebook.com/events/412852432380546/

Any queries or problems, let me know (oms26).

4. THEATRE: CULES Auditions, ADC/Corpus Directing, Producing and Writing Applications

CULES Auditions

The Cambridge University Light Entertainment Society (CULES) will be auditioning for its Lent show this weekend, the 28th and 29th of January.

CULES is a student charity that puts on silly plays and pantomimes and tours them around the local community. We visit schools and elderly peoples homes, and end the term with a student show that's open to the public. We aim to bring theatre to those who wouldn't normally get to experience it, including those who find it hard to get into the Cambridge theatre scene. Whether you're keen to try acting for the first time, or whether you're already well-versed, this will be a laid-back and fun show to take part in, and we'd love to have you along!

Our show this term will be UnFrozen, a pantomime retelling of the Disney classic, and everyone who auditions is guaranteed a part!

We have two kinds of auditions this term. On Saturday we have drop-in solo auditions, if you prefer to audition individually. On Sunday we have a big group audition, with lots of improv games and the opportunity to try out multiple parts. We want to make auditioning as fun and welcoming as possible, so come along to whichever of these you prefer the sound of!

Below are more details about each of the auditions. If you would like to take part but can't do either of those times, then please drop us an email at soc-cules-committee@lists.cam.ac.uk and we'll make sure you're included.

  *** SATURDAY 28th JANUARY ***

The solo auditions are on Saturday, between 7pm and 9pm. These will be held in the Blythe Room, on the Clare College Colony site just off Chesterton Lane. Here's a map showing where the Colony is:  https://goo.gl/maps/HHNYDFoGcom

    *** SUNDAY 29th JANUARY ***

The group audition will be held in the Gatehouse, in Clare College Memorial Court, from 4pm to 6pm. Here's a map showing Memorial Court:  https://goo.gl/maps/XeJ9xEUkyyT2

If you have any other questions about CULES or the auditions then please do get in touch, either with me (sc740@cam.ac.uk) or the committee (soc-cules-committee@lists.cam.ac.uk).

ADC/Corpus Directing, Producing and Writing Applications

Applications to direct, produce or write for a show in the ADC Theatre and Corpus Playroom Summer 2017 season are now open!

Deadline: Friday 10 February at 11am

We welcome applications from all students in Cambridge, regardless of your level of experience or your theatrical background, and particularly urge freshers to consider applying! The only thing you need in order to apply is a creative idea and a passion to see it through.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch on applications@adctheatre.com.

More information can be found on our website at adctheatre.com/applications.

Best of luck!
